The Human Givens Approach
Human Givens is a brief, positive, solution-focused, form of counselling that uses strategies in keeping with the way the brain is organized, to help us grow and thrive. It works with both the rational and the emotional and metaphorical aspects of mind so that conscious and unconscious patterns can be addressed on many levels.
A fundamental premise of HG is that if we get our essential emotional needs met, in balance, we can develop socially and emotionally healthy, rounded lives. HG aims to help us understand how to work with our innate guidance systems and resources such as instincts, memory, and imagination, to develop and maintain strong mental health and emotional resilience.
I am passionate about HG because I have found it to be down to earth, gentle, respectful and safe. Many people who work with me tell me that they cannot understand why they feel so much better because we don’t seem to have done anything complicated or difficult. This is because HG taps into our natural guidance systems in a way that feels natural and fits with common sense.
HG offers safe, effective strategies to help people let go of recent and historical trauma, and phobias without many sessions going over uncomfortable memories.
Typically, few sessions are needed to bring about change so we do not ask you to commit to lengthy or weekly sessions but work together, as and when is needed.
HG has the potential to help people let go of outmoded or unhelpful habits of behaviour because in states of deep relaxation, emotional and conceptual blocks can be let go and helpful new patterns created in the way we feel and think.
Using stories and metaphors of self healing and growth, new ways forward can open up from deep within our psyche so that defensive beliefs and resistant patterns can be dissolved gently and respectfully. The HG counsellor focuses on helping people identify clear goals, and access their unique strengths and innate resources to bring about positive change.
HG uses the latest psychological research and understanding to focus on strategies that work.
For some people, taking time to talk about their feelings and the impact of life experiences is an important part of resolving their issues, but that is not so for everyone.
The HG approach is highly effective for those who would prefer to focus on moving forward without exploring their feelings or dwelling on the past in any great detail.
